10 Unique Photography Locations In
Grand Rapids
You don't need to go to the same three photography spots everyone has on their Pinterest board to get good pictures.
Grand Rapids and the surrounding area have so many places that can make a session feel different depending on your personality, your outfits, and the kind of photos you want.
I especially love locations that give us something to work with beyond just “stand here and smile.” Give me interesting architecture, good light, texture, greenery, a cute coffee shop, or a place with a little personality and I'm already thinking about the possibilities.
Here are some places around Grand Rapids and West Michigan I'd consider if you want something a little different.
1. The Downtown Market
Instead of just saying “downtown,” let's get specific.
The Downtown Market has architecture, storefronts, brick, windows, and a more urban lifestyle feel. It can be a fun option if you want your photos to feel modern without going full-on editorial.
I could see this working really well for couples, individual portraits, branding, or a creative session.
2. Downtown Ada
If you want something that feels charming and polished without being downtown Grand Rapids, Downtown Ada is a great option.
The village has shops, architecture, greenery, sidewalks, and the river nearby, so there's plenty to work with.
I could see this being really cute for couples, families, maternity, or a lifestyle session that feels like you're just spending an afternoon together.
3. Kent/MSU Extension Garden
If you want flowers and greenery but don't necessarily want the same traditional garden setting you see everywhere, the Kent/MSU Extension garden is worth considering.
The different plants and garden areas can give us a lot of variety throughout a session.
This would be especially pretty for maternity, couples, portraits, and smaller family sessions.
4. Grand Ravines North County Park
If you want more of a natural West Michigan feel, Grand Ravines North County Park gives you plenty to work with.
Trails, trees, open areas, and natural scenery make it a good option for families and couples who want their session to feel relaxed and outdoorsy.
It's also a great place if you want movement instead of standing in one spot the entire time.
5. Bridge Street
Bridge Street gives you a completely different look from a traditional outdoor session.
Think buildings, brick, sidewalks, businesses, and city texture.
It's a fun option if you want your photos to have more of an urban lifestyle or editorial feel.
I'd especially consider it for couples, individual portraits, fashion, and creative sessions.
6. A Coffee Shop
This is one of my favorite kinds of ideas because your photo session doesn't have to feel like a photo session the entire time.
If you have a favorite coffee shop with a good atmosphere, we can build part of your session around it.
You could grab coffee, hang out, talk, and let me document some of those moments.
It can be especially cute for couples, branding, lifestyle portraits, or even a creative concept.
And yes, you can absolutely take pretty photos while holding a coffee.
7. A Bookstore or Record Store
If you're a reader, music lover, or just like the aesthetic, don't be afraid to think outside the usual outdoor locations.
A bookstore or record store can tell people something about you without having to explain it.
It can also give your session a completely different visual style.
This could be really fun for individual portraits, couples, creatives, or branding.
8. A Favorite Restaurant or Date-Night Spot
If you and your spouse have a favorite restaurant, dessert spot, or place you always go together, why not incorporate it?
Instead of just taking pictures *of* you, we can create pictures that actually say something about your relationship.
This could be especially fun for anniversaries, couples sessions, or a milestone you're celebrating together.
9. A Hotel, Airbnb, or Interesting Interior
Indoor locations can be great when the weather isn't cooperating—or when you simply want a different look.
An interesting hotel, rental, studio, or home with good windows and character can give us a more intimate lifestyle feel.
Think getting ready, sitting by a window, making coffee, hanging out on a couch, or just interacting naturally.
It doesn't have to feel staged.
10. Somewhere You Wouldn't Expect
This is honestly my favorite category.
A location doesn't have to be known as a “photography location” for it to photograph well.
Sometimes it's an interesting building. Sometimes it's a little shop. Sometimes it's a random corner with amazing light. Sometimes it's something you saw while driving and thought, *Wait...that could actually be cool.*
I like finding those places.

So what's the best location for your session?
There isn't one answer.
If you have kids, we might want somewhere they can move around. If you're doing engagement photos, maybe a coffee shop or your favorite date-night spot makes more sense. If you're doing portraits, we can go more urban or editorial. If you're doing a brand shoot, we can build the location around your visual identity.
And if you don't know what you want yet, that's okay too.
Part of my job is helping you figure that out.
